Gastric Lap Band Surgery
lapband-1The FDA approved the expanded use of the LAP-BAND® adjustable gastric banding system for obese adults. Obese adults with a BMI of 30-40 with at least one obesity related comorbid condition now qualify for LAP-BAND® System procedure when all other conservative weight-loss therapies have failed.

Similar to a belt, the band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. The band signals a sensation of fullness with small portions of food. Similar to the “sleeve,” the LAP-BAND® is a “restrictive” procedure. The digestive process remains unchanged because there is not a change in the placement of the intestine. The gastric band is connected to the “port” device which can be tightened periodically. This maintains appetite control land weight loss 1 year after surgery is approximately 40-50 percent.

Laproscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
sleeveThe “sleeve” surgery removes a large portion of the stomach leaving a banana or sleeve-shaped stomach. Known as a “restrictive procedure,” only a small portion of nutritious food can be eaten in each meal. Reduction in portion size promotes weight loss and improvement in medical problems. Average excess weight loss 1 year after surgery is approximately 70-80 percent.

Benefits to laproscopic weight loss surgery include:

  • Reduction in pain due to smaller incisions
  • Usually one-two day stay in the hospital
  • Patients usually resume normal activities within one-two weeks
Gastric Bypass Surgery
gastric-1Gastric bypass surgery involves the creation of a small stomach pouch (about the size of a person’s thumb). The small stomach pouch restricts food intake by allowing only a small amount of food to be eaten at one time. In addition, part of the small intestine is rerouted to promote “malabsorption.” This alters the digestive process, partially reducing the absorption of nutrients.

“Restriction” and “malabsorption” work together to promote weight reduction and improvement in health. Average excess weight loss 1 year after surgery is approximately 75-85 percent.

I came with an inflamed gallbladder, and Dr. Hung helped me process different options for treatment. I ultimately decided on a cholecystectomy and I am feeling much better.

Dr. Tabatabai was wonderful in treating my husband for a hiatal hernia. He was very compassionate, kind, explained the situation and what he could do to repair it. Would recommend him for any type of surgery that he specializes in. You are in good hands!

Dr. Hung removed my faulty gallbladder recently and I am so glad that my PCP referred me to him! He is very kind, well-informed, and he relays information in a way that is easily digestible. He is also very patient and answers every question in full detail to ensure you get the information you are seeking. He was very thorough in the follow up and overall, I am very happy with my experience. I was not enthused about the idea of getting my gallbladder out at 26 (thanks, genetics!) but he made me feel comfortable with the procedure and, ultimately, I am SO glad that I went through with it. I feel like a million bucks now! Thanks to Dr. Hung and all of the great staff who made my experience so positive.

Dr. Tabatabai surgically repaired my umbilical hernia – it’s very nice to have a “regular” belly button again! From the first time we met, I realized he’s a friendly, caring person, and he explained what he would do so I was clear what would happen during the surgery. The surgery went smoothly and I am happy with the results. At the follow-up a few weeks after the surgery, it was clear things healed up well and that I could get back to normal activities. Everyone I met at Surgical Associates has been friendly and easy to deal with, yet professional, and I would have Dr. Tabatabai do future surgery on me in a heartbeat.

Love! LOVE!! LOVE DR. HUNG!!! Talk about person-centered care!!!! My GP referred me to Dr. Hung for acute issues with my gallbladder. Dr. Hung and his nurse Lisa were both absolutely awesome!! They are kind, caring, intelligent, skilled, and wonderful human beings!! Dr. Hung listened and gave special attention to my personal concerns. I'm the person odd things seem to happen to, and in surgery, even before removing my gallbladder, Dr. Hung identified and successfully treated a second, very rare, potentially life-threatening medical condition that no tests ordered by 5 previous physicians had identified. I was back home a few hours later, on my feet a few days later, and able to celebrate Christmas with family rather than ending up in the hospital possibly fighting for my life. Dr. Hung, you gave me the best gift ever--health and more time with my girls! Thank you!!!!
